Quadrings, or x-rings, are static elastomer seals with an X-shaped cross-section profile and require a closed groove.
Their design includes four symmetrical lobes, which guarantee the seal by flexing, unlike the O-rings which instead compress on the section. Compared to O-rings, they are better suited to dynamic applications.
In ideal operating conditions, Quad-Rings show less compression on the surface on which they slide and less friction: in this way they are subject to less wear and less heat. Furthermore, thanks to the reserve of lubricating fluid that forms between the lobes, the Quadrings facilitate uniform sliding, eliminating the stick-slip phenomenon.
The elastomer that composes them is normally NBR in different Shore A hardnesses, but they can also be composed of other compounds for different thermal or chemical compatibility needs.
